Roof collapses as fire spread through Sherwood Park strip mall

EDMONTON - A fire Friday morning at a strip mall in Sherwood Park caused the roof to collapse and left three units damaged.

The fire started about 6:30 a.m. near Baseline Road and Broadmoor Boulevard. Firefighters had it until control in about an hour, said deputy fire chief Vern Elliot, but it soon flared up, and a portion of the mall’s roof collapsed. By about 10 a.m., the fire was back under control.

Two of the three businesses that were damaged were unoccupied, and the occupied unit had minor smoke damage, Elliot said. No one was injured.

The damage estimate and cause are not yet available.
