PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. - A 42-year-old man currently facing sex-related charges in Stony Plain is now being investigated by Prince Rupert RCMP after new sexual assault allegations surfaced relating to the man's time as a coach with the Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association.
Robert John Paolinelli, a former Spruce Grove teacher, was charged by Stony Plain RCMP in October with sexual exploitation, sexual assault and forcible confinement in connection with an alleged incident on Oct. 3.

Later that month, Prince Rupert RCMP opened their own investigation into Paolinelli's youth hockey coaching and refereeing activities while associated with the Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association back in the mid eighties to late nineties. The investigation was prompted by a public complaint.
"To date, we have spoken to one young man who made the difficult decision to speak with investigators and we believe that there may be others who were victimized by Paolinelli, during his tenure as a hockey coach/referee in Prince Rupert," RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk stated in a news release.
Paolinelli formerly coached hockey in Spruce Grove, and had been coaching hockey in St. Albert at the time he was charged.

"Because he was in a position of trust there's potential there could be other victims," said Const. Barb Roy of the Stony Plain RCMP detachment.
Investigators are currently interviewing a number of individuals who may have had contact with Paolinelli in the past.
"It's pretty unbelievable, hearing about somebody in an authority position taking advantage of their players or whatever the case may be," said one St. Albert hockey player who asked not to be named.
RCMP investigators are asking any former victims or anyone with information that may aid their investigation to contact police.
"Given the stigma and long lasting negative effects suffered by victims of such crimes, we have an important role to play not only in investigating the allegations, but in ensuring that the appropriate support is provided for victims of these crimes," Moskaluk stated. "This support includes maintaining their privacy throughout the investigation and are asking that victims or witnesses come forward."
Paolinelli's next court appearance is December 14 in Stony Plain.

Stony Plain teacher faces sex charges

Thursday, October 13, 2011
A 41-year-old Stony Plain man is facing sex-related charges stemming from an incident in early October, RCMP said Wednesday.

Robert John Paolinelli is charged with sexual exploitation, sexual assault and forcible confinement in connection with an alleged incident on Oct. 3, said Stony Plain RCMP Const. Barb Roy.

He was released on bail and is set to appear Nov. 2 in Stony Plain Provincial Court.

Cindi Vaselenak, superintendent for Evergreen Catholic Separate Regional Division, confirmed Paolinelli is a teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Spruce Grove.

Vaselenak said in an email that the alleged incidents occurred outside of the school district and the teacher was “removed from a teaching assignment pending the results of the criminal investigation.

“Given the circumstances occurred outside the school district, it is not appropriate for us to make any further comment at this time,” Vaselenak said.

Roy would not release any further details, citing the ongoing court case.
