Fire burns Jasper Avenue apartment, snarls traffic

EDMONTON - The cause of a Monday morning fire in a vacant apartment building east of downtown Edmonton will remain a mystery, fire investigators say.
Firefighters were called around 6:15 a.m. by a neighbour who reported flames in a three-storey walk-up near Jasper Avenue and 82 Street, said Tim Wilson, spokesman for Edmonton Fire Rescue.
Firefighters arrived and quickly called in additional crews. In all, about 50 firefighters responded to the blaze.
After firefighters determined it was safe to enter the building, they did two searches and didn’t find anyone.
The fire was under control in about an hour.
Investigators determined the fire started in a basement suite living room, but weren’t able to pinpoint an exact cause because of a lack of evidence, Wilson said.
The fire caused about $150,000 in damage.
