EDMONTON - A man is dead after he was run over by a pickup truck in a parking lot at a retail plaza in south Edmonton.
Shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, three men left a restaurant near Ellerslie Road and Parsons Road, said Insp. Brian Nowlan. The driver went to the driver’s side of a white pickup truck parked in the lot near the restaurant.
The two other men went around the passenger side of the truck, and starting “horsing around,” Nowlan said.
The driver got into the truck, but was unaware that one of his friends had fallen under the rear right wheel.
“He began to drive away, and ran over his friend,” Nowlan said. The men involved are believed to be in their early 20s.
“I can tell you based on his injuries, he succumbed quite quickly,” Nowlan said.
Police will investigate whether alcohol was a factor in the incident.
As police investigated, a yellow tarp covered a body that lay beside a white pickup truck. A trail of blood could be seen on the pavement, and police tape surrounded the parking lot.
The truck was parked by a large retail plaza with a number of stores, including a Canadian Brew House and a Starbucks.
Brian Hegge, 44, and his nephew Scott, 22, were standing outside the Canadian Brew House when they saw a man run from the parking lot toward a fire truck and police car. The man, who was dressed in coveralls, brought the emergency crews over to where the pickup truck was parked.
“He was definitely panic-stricken,” Brian said.
