22-year-old man first homicide of 2012

EDMONTON - A 22-year-old man found dead in a north Edmonton back alley is the city’s first homicide victim in 2012, police said Tuesday.
The body of Welid Sahle Meskel was discovered near 101st Street and 134th Avenue shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday.
An autopsy was completed Tuesday, but police aren’t releasing the cause of death.
Police do not believe the killing was random but would not say if it was drug or gang related.
Officers continue to interview witnesses in the area where the body was found, said Chad Orydzuk, spokesman with the Edmonton Police Service.
Police are asking anyone with information about what Meskel was doing in the hours before his death to contact them at 780-423-4567.
Anonymous information can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
By this time last year, there had been 10 homicides in Edmonton. The city had a record-breaking 47 homicides in 2011.
