EDMONTON - The second parking ban of the season takes effect Monday morning, following the heaviest snowfall in Edmonton all winter.
City crews are working to clear the streets of nearly 20 centimetres of snow that fell Saturday and Sunday.
As of 7 a.m. Monday, cars left on designated parking ban routes could be ticketed and towed. The ban affects residential bus routes.
“We prefer compliance, but enforcement may be something we have to take,” said Bob Dunford, the city’s roadway maintenance director.
Tickets are $50. Towed vehicles will be taken to the city’s impound lot at 12230 124th Ave. Drivers will have to pay at least $116 plus $28 for each day their cars are impounded.
Dunford said crews were plowing arterial roads and clearing windrows on downtown streets Sunday. Residential bus routes will be cleared Monday, and residential blading will begin Tuesday. A schedule for residential blading will be posted Monday.
Dunford said the lack of snow this season has had transportation employees performing out-of-season tasks, like fixing potholes and clearing litter.
“This is what everybody is trained to handle. When we finally get something like this, I think they’re happy to be out doing this kind of work,” he said.
The parking ban will likely last 48 hours, Dunford said. Residents can check its status on the City of Edmonton website, Twitter or Facebook pages, or by signing up for an email notification system.
The last time the ban was issued was in mid-November. It snowed 13.6 centimetres on Nov. 17. Since Dec. 22, less than 12 centimetres of snow has fallen in Edmonton.
