BARNALA, Feb 23, 2012: The Bhagat Singh aficionados' are elated over union government decision of introducing Rs. 5 coins having legendary martyr picture. The reserve bank of India(RBI) has announced to soon introduce coins devoted to martyr' birth anniversary with Bhagat Singh picture on one side of the coin.
Incidentally Bhagat Singh' centenary was observed in September 2007. Earlier a set of Rs 100 and Rs 5 commemorative coins was introduced in 2010 but only as a souvenir. Earlier Bhagat Singh too had been termed as terrorist.
Though some might be terming it a ploy of the state in using Bhagat Singh name with money matters but many are overjoyed over the supreme sacrifice of martyr being duly recognized. Many aficionados had been demanding Bhagat Singh pictures on currency notes and a campaign too had been going on at social networking sites especially face book and you tube with a group formed over the name 'Teri photo bhagat siho kyon ni lagdi notaan te(Why your picture Bhagat Singh is not on currency notes). Many songs of the same title too are doing the rounds. Bhagat Singh born on September 28, 1907 was hanged to death on March 23, 1931 at Lahore at the young age of 24.
"It is a highly welcome step. The coins with martyr' image should be put in large scale circulation so that it could promote the awareness about the martyr across the nation. I wholeheartedly welcome it", said historian Malwinderjit Singh Warraich. Waraich has done a lot of research about Bhagat Singh and Gadarites. The petitions of Waraich had ensured getting Kuka and Jallianwala Bagh martyrs under the Sawatantarta senani pension scheme.
It all started after the Bhagat Singh centenary was observed with gaiety in 2007 that government started recognizing the supreme sacrifices made by the legendary martyr in India' freedom struggle. When Punjab residents observed the day by lighting lamps atop their houses like Diwali, the state started realizing to recognize his sacrifices and now decision to introduce coin is also in that direction", said Inqulabi Kendra Punjab activist Narain Dutt.
Revolutionary youth association( RYA) activist Kanwaljit Singh said though it is welcome step but it the step seems to have been taken under pressure as masses term Bhagat Singh as the biggest martyr and union government seems wanted to showcase it too thinks the same though it has been shying away in recognizing the sacrifices of martyr.
As per RBI sources the Rs. 5 coin, to be introduced soon will have picture of Bhagat Singh with the words "Shahid Bhagat Singh Birth Centenary 1907-2007" engraved on one side of the coin. The flip side will be divided into three parts with two horizontal lines and will bear the Lion capitol of Ashoka Pillar and the value of denomination. The figures 1907-2007 shall be shown below the picture in numerals. The iron and chromium coin will have a diameter of 23 mm.
