Nickel-sized hail rattles windows in downtown Edmonton

EDMONTON - Downtown Edmonton was pummeled by hail the size of peppermints around 4 p.m. Thursday as a thunderstorm raged into the city from the west, blackening the sky.

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the city and surrounding areas less than an hour earlier.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park around 3:20 p.m., but was upgraded to a warning minutes later.

Environment Canada warned residents the storm could bring strong wind gusts and very heavy rain.

Spruce Grove, Morinville, Mayerthorpe, Evansburg, Leduc, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Tofield, Drayton Valley, Devon, Rimbey, Pigeon Lake, Rocky Mountain House and Caroline were also covered by the warning.

Several other areas in central eastern Alberta are still under a thunderstorm watch issued around 11:30 a.m.

Conditions that could create severe thunderstorms will last into the early evening, Environment Canada said.
