Five people had to be rushed to hospital early Saturday morning following a serious crash northeast of Edmonton.

Strathcona RCMP were called to Highway 21 and Township Road 542 around 3 a.m, after a westbound Toyota Corolla T-boned a northbound taxi in the intersection.

The impact of the crash caused serious injuries to each of the occupants in both cars, including the 54 year-old male tax driver and his passengers - two Fort Saskatchewan men, aged 21 and 42; as well as the passenger in the Toyota - a 23 year old woman who is also from Fort Saskatchewan.

The injuries of the 23 year-old driver of the Toyota, who is from Thunder Bay, Ontario, were most severe and life-threatening, so he was transported by STARS Air Ambulance to an Edmonton-area hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates that he failed to stop at the stop sign before entering the intersection. Alcohol doesn't appear to have been a factor in the collision, though.

The area was shut down until around 9 a.m. as RCMP investigated the collision.
