U of A shooting: Man accused in armoured car massacre didn’t appear in person in court

EDMONTON - A 21-year-old man charged in the deaths of three of his armoured car company co-workers and the wounding of a fourth did not appear in person for his second court appearance this morning in Edmonton.

Travis Brandon Baumgartner is accused of robbery with a firearm, first-degree murder and attempted murder in the shooting deaths of the guards at the University of Alberta’s HUB Mall. The guards, who worked for G4S Canada, had been restocking a bank machine at the university the early hours of June 15.

A representative for defence lawyer Peter Royal asked that the case be put over to Aug. 16. It is expected Baumgartner will not appear in person at that next appearance either.

He was arrested June 16 as he tried to cross the Canada-U.S. border in British Columbia with $334,000 in a backpack.

Killed were Michelle Shegelski, 26, Eddie Rejano, 39, and Brian Ilesic, 35. The wounded guard, 25-year-old Matthew Schuman, had been shot in the head, but was transferred out of intensive care late last month.
His next appearance in court is 8 August, 2012.
