Police work to prevent auto crime in north Edmonton

Edmonton police members gave residents in a northside community tips on how to keep their vehicles safe from theft.
Saturday was the final deployment for the Community Action Team (CAT) in north Edmonton and organizers say they were responding to citizens’ concerns about auto theft.
“People who don’t necessarily live in these areas are coming into the areas, they are stealing vehicles.  They are stealing license plates,” Acting Staff Sgt. Jared Buhler told CTV News.

“They are good communities but they are being affected by bad people who want to take advantage of that.”
Officers were distributing anti-theft licence plate screws and anti-theft steering wheel locks to vehicle owners at the Delton Centre Mall, 12904 82 Street.
Bhuler said they also had uniform officers distributing material to homeowners in the area.
“I think they appreciate us being out there and having that interaction with them and trying to raise awareness about issues that affect them,” he said.
Buhler explained that CAT deployments cycled through the city’s police divisions responding to concerns and needs in different neighbourhoods.
“We select the neighbourhoods based on current trends and neighbourhoods we feel we can have an impact in,” he explained.
